Current Wine of the Month Selections - April 2008
MEMBER'S CHOICE
The votes are in and the people have spoken: Italian wines ruled the roost at our annual Wine of the Month member party, where members voted on their favorite reds and whites to be the April Wine of the Month. We'd like to thank all of those who attended for voicing your opinion and would like to thank every Wine of the Month Club member for your continued support. Now, without further ado, here are the highest-voted wines: Dedicato a Marianna Falanghina, a white from Azienda Vitinicola Marianna in Campania in southern Italy, and Bracci dei Tati Barbera di Piemonte, a juicy red from the Piedmont region in Italy.
Marianna Falaghina 2006 Regular Price: $13.99 Club Price: $11.99
In the nose, Falanghina is quite delicate on the nose with hints of field flowers and light apple. On the palate, it is full-bodied and fresh with fine notes of white fruit. Though it is a white, it has a bite at the end that recalls the taste of pomegranate. In terms of food matches, it can work in a number of different ways with such dishes as grilled or fried fish, rice pilaf and traditional Campanian recipes such as "paccari Napolitano."
Bricco Dei Tati Barbera di Piemonte 2006 Regular Price: $10.99 Club Price: $8.99
This wine comes out with a blast of cherry fruit on the nose along with some faint licorice notes and spice from the oak. The small tannic character creates a supple texture on the tongue to cushion the bright, zippy cherry flavor. Acidity gives this a vibrant character and a medium finish. Barbera is usually a great companion to food and this version is no exception. It would go great with medium to strong cheeses, barbecue and game. Its acidity also makes it a great match for pasta with beef marinara sauces.
