There are currently 1700 Certified Specialists of Wine in the USA.

 

And 4 of them are at Wine Gourmet!

What is a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW)?

The Certified Specialist of Wine Exam is designed by the Society of Wine Educators for the wine industry by a team of wine educators.  The exam is focused on core principles in which with all wine professionals should be familiar. 

Subjects include:

  • Viticulture
  • Grape Varieties
  • Wine Production
  • Wine Regions
  • Wine Tasting

The Certified Specialist of Wine Exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions based on all the subjects above.  A certificate is awarded to those who answer at least 75 percent correctly.  There is an approximate 60% pass rate.

Kimberly’s mission is to educate people about the most extraordinary food product in the world – wine!  Insisting that her staff become Certified Specialists of Wine, Kimberly started the first Wine School in the Roanoke Valley.  Since September 2003, every monthly class has been sold out and additional classes have been added.

Cary is the lead instructor for his famous Chocolate & Wine Seminar held in February and December.  He is passionate about wine & beer.  He is the primary beer & wine buyer and is studying towards the Level 1 Sommelier Exam and plans to sit the Certified Wine Educator Exam in the near future.


Larry Shaver,
Certified Specialist of Wine

Larry is also a Certified Specialist of Wine and is the Lead Instructor for Intermediate Wine Seminar as well as all of our Advanced Wine Seminars.  Larry can pronounce all of those complicated foreign words and excels at food and wine pairings.

 


Mike Harper
, Certified Specialist of Wine &
Certified Culinarian

Mike's background intermixes his culinary training with his wine & beer experience.  He is the lead instructor for Beer 101.  We regarded him as a "Wine Chef" because of his ability to pair wine with food not just food with wine. 


 

 

Melinda Hayes, Wine Lover
Melinda is the primary instructor for our WINE 101 & WINE 102.  She believes that wine is fun and should be "Snob-Free." 

 

 

 

Guest Instructors
Master Sommeliers, grapegrowers, winemakers, importers and distributors with an extensive background are frequent guest instructors at Wine Gourmet.
